THE POWER OF HOPE AND PERSISTENCE IN PRAYER

The creation of mankind and the universe displays the very profound nature of God. It displays God as El Deot (The God of Knowledge). El gives us the insight of the Lord our God as having the ultimate strength, might and power. El expresses the sovereign nature and character of God. El Deot defines God as having perfect knowledge of everything from beginning to end. He is the omniscient God.

  • 1 Samuel 2:3 Talk no more so very proudly; let not arrogance go forth from your mouth, for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed (emphasis mine)

The above Scripture was part of Hannah’s prayer of gratitude to God for displaying His sovereignty in a situation of hopelessness. The manifestation of God’s knowledge and power in her predicament removed shame and reproach and brought healing and restoration to her dignity as a woman.

You need to understand who Hannah is. Hannah, the second wife of Elkanah, was barren and longed to have her own children. This desire was so strong that, as a result of grave disappointment of her hopes, she stopped eating and wept profusely. We even learn that this left Hannah embarrassed (see 1 Samuel 1:1-7). To make matters worse, Peninnah, who was the other wife, had children and would jeer at Hannah for her inability to conceive her own children.

Hannah had one thing going for her though; she understood the place of persistence in prayer. She simply would not give up. Knowing God’s sovereignty and the place of God’s servant or prophet in her life, she would not give in. Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy who became a prophet and was instrumental in the fulfillment of God’s purposes in Israel (see 1 Samuel 1:20).

God is faithful and true to His name and Word. The question is: will you give up the empty pursuit of your hopes in exchange for God’s thoughts and plans for your life, family, organization, church, ministry and nation?
